EMILY ALWAYS FOUND New York City fascinating. She was an avid people watcher, and the place was packed with them. They came from all sorts of lifestyles. There were the homeless, the rich and famous, street walkers, hustlers and con artists. There was almost too much to absorb, but she gave it her best shot. Between shopping and sightseeing, they must have walked a million miles.
She laughed at how uneasy Bill appeared to be, standing there amongst row after row of sleek evening dresses. âWell? What about this one?â she asked yet again.
âItâs just great.â His tone clearly said he was ready to leave but was trying to be patient.
âWhat happened to shopping is my middle name? Okay. Iâll make a decision. I promise weâll be out of here in ten minutes, and then we can go get some lunch.â
She hoped she could keep to her promise but was torn between a dark blue shimmering strapless gown and one that was more your average-day basic black dress. She loved the blue one, but it was the kind that would demand attention. The black number would let her blend into the background more. She needed to make a decision soon because Bill was clearly uneasy in fancy dress shops. She could understand. This was, after all, a shop that catered to high class, upscale women. It wasnât the type of store Emily normally shopped at, but she wanted something that would make Bill proud of her.
Emily rehung the blue dress. Tonight she wanted to blend in. Tonightâs event was about being there for him and not about being noticed.
âYou are taking the black dress? I like the blue one. It sets your green eyes off.â He tilted her face and kissed the tip of her nose. âBeautiful eyes,â and kissed her lips. âBeautiful mouth,â then kissed her neck. âBeautiful neck.â
Bill took the black dress from her and put it back on the rack, then took the blue dress down. âThis one is for me.â
Emily arched an eyebrow. âI thought you were wearing a tux?â
Bill placed his hand on his chest. âA joke. I love a good joke.â He slipped his hand through the crook of her arm and headed them toward a sales lady, hovering nearby. âWould you send this to the Reaumur? Room 853. It needs to be there by five tonight.â
After they left the shop, Emily asked, âAre you always so bossy? I should have just sent you in there to buy the dress for me.â
He reached over and teasingly ruffled her hair. âYou know you wanted that dress. I could see it written all over your face. Why buy a dress you donât want when the one you do want is right there? Women. Iâll never understand them.â
People took notice as they passed them on the street when Emily punched him in the arm. âWomen? What about bossy men? Are we back in the stone age or what?â
âLook me in the eye and tell me you didnât want that dress?â He tugged her toward him and slipped a hand through her arm.
